Day 13 - Tulum ruins, Tulum - Mexico

Day at Tulum ruins (14/01/09)

Despite the torrential rain we decided to visit the ruins at Tulum. The ancient Mayan city was built on the cliff tops by the sea. This is the main building of the city.

Lots of small buildings and crumbling walls were dotted throughout the site.

It must have been an incredible city when it was inhabited.

The walls were adorned with intricate designs. In Mayan times these would have been brightly painted, you can see remnants of the red paint above.

These iguanas would have been the original inhabitants of the cliffs. They would have been before the Mayans and they are still there now.

They were probably about a metre long from nose to tail.

When they looked at you, you knew that this was their cliff. You can tell the males from the females by the zebra striped crest on the back of the males.

Some of the buildings are very close to the cliff edge. You can see what a gloomy day it was from this picture.

Another important building in the temple complex.

The site and the cliffs were very well kept. There were lots of varieties of plants growing everywhere.

The main temple again.

The way the buildings were spread out made it easy to imagine what the original city might have been like.

An alley between buildings.

Despite the novelty of swimming in the sea with a cliff top Mayan temple towering over you, Liz resisted the temptation to strip off in the cold wind and rain and join the Americans in the sea.

This is cactus is exactly the same as Adam had for his dinner the other night. It wasn´t very nice but then again he has never cooked cactus before.

Liz watching Adam carefully, we all know how accident prone he is and he was pretty close to the edge. Unfortunately he managed to keep his footing!

There were still some great views despite the weather.

The rain drops had accumulated in an interesting way in this rather pretty purple plant.
