COPAN RUINAS (23/02/09)

After a very early start we travelled from Guatemala to Honduras. Just across the border is the town of Copan Ruinas named after the ruins of the same name which we visited in the afternoon. Around the entrance to this site lots of multi coloured macaws were sitting in the trees.

The buildings themselves were not particularly impressive, what made this site stand out was all the incredible carvings such as this one of a King.

Many of the carvings depicted quite scary looking beasts and monsters.

Also a common theme were skulls, both human and animal, such as this monkey skull.

The detail was amazing.

This civilisation certainly seemed to be trying scare something away.

Having said that this incredibly camp, grinning and dancing jaguar wouldn´t scare anything away. This was Adam´s favourite, he was even copying the pose several times much to our amusement.
