AROUND ARENAL VOLCANO, COSTA RICA (07/03/09)

Once again we decided to go for a walk in the rainforest. And once again it poured with rain. We did, however, see some fantastic plants such as this potato relative with metre wide leaves.

The forest. Sometimes called cloudforest, sometimes called rainforest. It was cloudy and raining.

What made the forest so incredible was the large amount of rainfall. As a result of all the water plants can grow anywhere and so you will find hundreds of plants growing on other plants and other plants growing on them.

A single tree branch may be home to a whole host of different plant species.

The rainforest is unbelievably green and dense.

It also rains ALOT.

These hanging mosses collected rain water in a very attractive way.

After our visit to the rainforest we went to see the lava flow at Volcan Arenal, one of the World´s 10 most active volcanoes. However due to the clouds this is what we saw.

Apparently it is better to see the lava flow at night since the glow shows up better. Due to the continued cloud cover this is what we saw.
I think blue plastic suits you!
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible landscape you are in right now. Amazing.
Fab pictures of your friend 'Mantis' and the rainforest. My class are really enjoying your trip and know having spent a day at the 'rainforest' in Newbury how hot it is.
ReplyDeleteThey would also like to let you know that plants that grow on other trees in the tree canopy are epiphytes. Bromeliads are special types of epiphytes, their leaves grow to form a vase (like the top of a pineapple) in which water gathers and can be home to frogs and even small snakes.
We could give you more interesting facts about drip tips and the dumb palm (don't eat it!) but we will save that for later!
Lots of love xx
