Days 159, 160 & 161 - Lima, Peru

LIMA (09/06/09 - 11/06/09)

Plaza de Armas the central square in Lima, capital city of Peru.

We had a fun couple of days looking around this great city.

One of our reasons for being in Lima when we were was to catch the famous Lima to Huancayo train which only runs twice a month. We found our way to the train station only to be told that we couldn´t buy train tickets at the train station and had to go to one of the local supermarkets (where else?).

If you look closely at the walls of this large church you will notice it is covered in black dots. They are hundreds and hundreds of pigeons, Jo (Sullivan) would love it here!

On the main square is the Presidential palace which bears more than a passing resemblance to Buckingham Palace. We stood out the front and watched the changing of the guard which included this brass band. Rather disappointingly they didn´t venture outside the gates, rather cowardly considering that they are soldiers and the whole plaza was full of armed police.

Some of the hundreds of police stationed around the centre of Lima. Quite what the function of so many police actually serves eludes us, they never seem to do anything.

Multi coloured slum houses stretch right up the sides of the hills.

Being that the police in the centre of Lima already out number the general public we don´t know why they needed a troop of police horses too.

The first hotel we booked into in Lima didn´t suit us so moved. Our next hotel was much nicer and as an added bonus has three tortoises as permanent residents.
