Day 214 - Kerikeri to Kaitaia, NZ

KERIKERI TO NINETY MILE BEACH (03/08/09)

Driving around New Zealand is very different to home. The roads are very quiet and there are fantastic views around every corner.

One of the great things about having our own car is that we can stop where ever we like. Sometimes we find unexpected highlights such as Cable Bay where we stopped for a quick look and ended up spending a couple of hours walking along the beach.

As usual Adam was climbing on the rocks taking pictures of the sea and the rock pools.

Whilst Adam was busy taking his own pictures Liz took this one of a Heron.

Amazingly we again had fantastic sunny weather although still not warm enough to go for a swim!

Once again enjoying the deserted winter beaches.

The dark black rocks are entirely covered in tiny black mussels.

In the summer these beaches are completely packed, but we prefer putting up with a bit of cold wind for a bit of peace and quiet.

Another few hours driving brought us to 90 mile beach, at the southern end of which we would be spending the night. The beach runs all the way 90 miles or so north to Cape Reinga where we were headed in the morning.
