ROAD TRIP AROUND BALI (08/11/09)

Ever craving danger and excitement we decided to take our lives into our hands and hire a car on the crazy streets of Bali. Dodging mopeds, monkeys and mango sellers we headed north into the countryside and up into the mountains.

Despite the fact that it was quite a hazy day there was still a great view from the top.

Long-Tailed Macaques lined the roadsides and we often had to slow down and honk the horn to avoid running them over.

Over the other side of the mountains we decided to stop, partly to visit a waterfall and partly because the insanely winding roads were driving Liz crazy. There was about a 30 minute walk to the falls but the path took us through beautiful countryside.

The very attractive but unfortunately named Gitgit Falls.

Our initial reason for hiring the car was as a cheap way of getting to the northern beaches of Bali. However when we arrived the beaches were grey and dull, much like the days weather, and we only stayed long enough for a quick pineapple juice. We were enjoying driving through the country so much that it really didn't affect us very much anyway.

On the way back south towards Ubud we stopped off at a local market for a nosy around.

Going almost anywhere on foot in Bali involves running the gauntlet of the hundreds of mopeds.

The large fruit and vegetable section of the market had a wide selection of produce from the familiar to the weird and wonderful.

Here we are trying Jack Fruit for the first time. As we said before it has an entirely unique flavour ( day 303- confusingly because the blog was so behind it was written after we had done this) although having tried it again since Adam says it tastes a bit like apple turnover whereas Elinor says it tastes a bit like banana penny sweets and Liz says it tastes like sick. Obviously only Adam and Elinor enjoyed it. If this gives you any idea of what Jack Fruit tastes like you have more imagination than any of us.
