CORDILLERA BLANCA (06/06/09)

Huaraz is famous for its fantastic trekking. For our first day we chose one of the less touristed trails, as it turned out we didn`t see another person the entire day.

The trek was through a beautiful valley and once again we had blazing sunshine.

This rock had a strange rounded protrusion which Adam is sitting with his legs either side of, giving the illusion that his legs are a lot longer than they actually are.

There were many interesting plants and flowers along the way.

This is about as daring as Liz gets.

Adam and Liz on the trail, we asked a cow to take the photo!

One main stream ran the entire length of the valley. The area receives virtually no rain this time of year but the streams are always full with glacial melt water, and consequently extremely cold.

Another view down the valley with the red colour of iron oxide in the rocks.

The view of the snow capped mountains got better and better as we walked.

Many waterfalls cascaded down the steep rocky sides of the valley.

After walking for several hours we finally reached our destination - this stunningly blue lake.

Down the flanks of the huge mountains runs this glacier, feeding the lake and the stream that runs out of it.

A close up view of one of the mountain peaks.

The snow and rocks formed fascinating patterns.

The bottom edge of the glacier forming a small waterfall from the melted ice.

We sat next to the lake for just under an hour eating our lunch and having a rest. It was a great feeling to have such an amazing place all to ourselves.

Adam wanted to climb to the top but realised that he was too lazy.

Returning back down the valley all the clouds cleared leaving us with a breath taking view.

This donkey bade us farewell from the park with the loudest and longest "hee-haw" you have ever heard in your life.
