Day 2 - Chichen Itza, Mexico

(03/01/09)

Got up reasonably early and staggered the 30 minute walk to the bus station in 30 degree heat and baggage equalling our own weight, probably would have taken about 5 minutes ordinarily.

We had missed the 1st class bus and so were told either to wait until the next day or go second class. We decided to go second class although Liz´s face was pretty funny, she´s never even been on National Express before.

The bus was not as bad as you might think. We were the only tourists bar one lone girl, but the Mexicans smiled at us and we were reasonably comfortable despite having all our bags piled on our legs. People were getting on and off, in between stops, selling snacks and begging. One man had a huge scar, it looked like he had been chopped in half, we gave him a couple of coins!

A notable aspect of our experience of Mexican bus travel so far is that the buses are not marked and neither are the stops. With our admittedly embarassingly limited Spanish how did we know where to get off?

Despite a couple of nerve wracking hours peering out of the window we opted for getting off next to the enormous Mayan Temple.

We then got a taxi to our hotel in the jungle. Tired out we had something to eat and went to bed.

Travelling
is
EXHAUSTING!

BUT STILL SMILING!
