WHANGAREI TO KERIKERI (02/08/09)

Since we had yet another glorious sunny day we decided to hop on a ferry over to the town of Russell. This tiny town only has a couple of streets and a few buildings but is very pretty and relaxing and has a lovely curved bay.

Now that we are paying western prices again a cup of coffee in a cafe has become a treat rather than an every day routine.

Having fully explored the town in about two minutes we headed along the coast for a short walk.

A view of the town across the bay.

Lunch is always an important part of our day and we found a nice spot over looking the main jetty to eat our cheese and marmite sandwiches.

After lunch we caught the ferry back to the mainland and continued north to Kerikeri where we were spending the night. The town of Kerikeri is famous for its historical buildings including the oldest building in New Zealand built a dizzying amount of time ago all the way back in 1835! You can see it the other side of this small lake.

Kerikeri also has a large waterfall called Rainbow Falls. We visited late in the afternoon just as the sun was disappearing behind the trees.

Our bed for the night was in a working farm which had rows and rows of orange trees surrounding it on all sides.
