Day 229 - Farewell Spit, NZ

FAREWELL SPIT (18/08/09)

Just north of Abel Tasman NP lies Farewell Spit, a 27km sand spit stretching out into the Tasman Sea and representing the most northerly point of the South Island. You can just see it disappearing over the horizon.

The spit is narrow and consists almost entirely of bleak sand dunes. We started to walk along the desolate beach on the northern side but quickly and carefully retraced our steps when we arrived at a sign stating "DANGER QUICKSAND".

As we headed back we crossed several fields of a sheep farm and were cautiously watched by this pair of lambs.
