Day 309- Bali, Indonesia

KUTA AND BADUAN TEMPLE (06/11/09)

What better thing to do on your first morning away from cold, grey England than to head down to the beach in the 32°C heat? The town of Kuta itself is tourist trap hell but the beach itself is quite pleasant.

The sea was the perfect temperature and the large crashing waves were great fun.

After a bit of fun on the beach we decided to show Elinor some of the temple architechture that Bali is famous for at Baduan Temple. This is the main entrance.

As always there were hundreds of statues, this one has been decorated with a traditional head scarf.

The temple was one of the best we have seen, a good introduction for Elinor to Hindu culture.

One of the ornate ceremonial instruments inside the temple. It is like a row of small gongs and is played with beaters like a xylophone.

This looks like possibly one of the main buildings in the temple but actually there are many different buildings of various shapes and sizes that make up the complex.

As we said before there had been an important ceremony here the previous weekend and this enormous elephant-like monster was left from that.

It was very well made and intricately decorated and on closer inspection we realised it was made entirely of food- a giant religious offering.
