Day 120 - Quito, Ecuador

VOLCAN PICHINCHA, QUITO, ECUADOR (01/05/09)

On the outskirts of Quito they have built a cable car up the side of Volcan Pichincha. It takes you up to an altitude of 4500m.

As usual we got there early to avoid the crowds and got a car all to ourselves. Here´s an empty cable car descending with the city of Quito in the background.

A spectacular view (and the background is not bad either).

Quito is a far bigger city than we ever imagined.

The Andes - not just on the end of your armies!

Due to the previous day being very cloudy we were lucky to have a clear morning.

We came across some horses having their breakfast. Adam tried to pat one but it chased him off (much to Liz´s amusement).

Now there is a pretty view!

Little did Adam know that Liz would persuade him to ride his nemesis the horse.

Liz had great fun, Adam prefers two legs!

Adam abandoned his horse going down this hill, but it did mean he could take lots of pictures of Liz.

Suddenly within the space five minutes thick white clouds blew in completly obscuring the view. We found this very amusing since it was exactly the same time that the crowds of other tourists had started arriving.

Liz in the process of being obscured by clouds.

Hot chocolate, the antidote to cold mountains.

Going back down.

Happy to have a cable car to ourselves again. By this time all those coming up the mountain were crammed to maximum capacity.
