CUENCA (10/05/09)

From Otavalo we travelled 13 hours overnight on the bus to the southern city of Cuenca. It happened to be Mothers day in Ecuador so there were lots of families having a day out together in the central park.
One of the few reasonably tasteful cathedrals we have seen in our travels in Latin America.

The weather in Cuenca is considerably warmer than in Quito.

Towards the end of the afternoon the people disappeared and we had the streets to ourselves.

The first hotel we checked into in Cuenca turned out to be over priced and the hot water didn´t work. The lady that owned it refused to accept the fact that the water was not hot and when we argued with her she went away and came back with our money and asked us to leave. Our next hotel not only had the luxury of consistently hot water but also had friendly staff, a kitchen and lovely views over the city.

The blue domed cathedral.
