Day 282- Magnetic Island, Australia

MAGNETIC ISLAND AND THE MINI MOKE (10/10/09)

Despite the island being small (only about 6km from end to end) and having a very good public bus service we could not resist the temptation to hire a Mini Moke for a day. For anyone that doesn't know what a Moke is, it's basically a 40 year old Mini with an open body designed for places such as Magnetic Island that have 320+ days of sunshine a year. They are also amazing fun to drive around winding, seaside roads.

We took advantage of our wheels to visit some of the less accessible parts of the island.

At about 35º every day we never needed an excuse to jump straight in the sea.

Back on the road! The fact that the seats were almost road level and the 40 year old engine made a deafening racket made the narrow winding roads feel more like a race track despite the fact we were only going about 40mph. Speedy Gonzales also contributed, no doubt, to the exaggerated feeling of speed.

Halfway up to the highest point on the island.

Right at the top we had amazing 360º views of the island. Here you can see the most popular stretches of sand with the ferry port in the far distance.

Climbing down another bush track to reach another fantastic beach.

Climbing up more boulders- well... just for the sake of it really.

A little bit of a walk and yet another stunning beach to ourselves. And this one didn't even have any naked old men on it.

The end of one of the most fun days we have had. We were sad to drop 'Speedy' back at the depot- we could have quite happily kept him for the rest of our travels around Australia.
