MAGNETIC ISLAND (07/10/09 & 08/10/09)

From the dreary industrial town of Townsville, Magnetic Island is in striking contrast despite only being a 20 minute ferry ride away. Beautiful sandy beaches bordered by enormous granite boulders surround the island and the fact that many of the beaches are inaccessible by road means spots such as the above are not hard to find. In case you were wondering, the name of the island comes from Captain Cook's voyage around the island in 1770 when he reported that the island had a strange effect on his compass. Attempts with a wide array of modern equipment to recreate this effect have all failed so the only conclusion to reach is that his compass was faulty. Amazing that he got so far really.

Magnetic Island has several nude beaches which happen to be the best beaches on the island. It probably works as a deterrent for many tourists but not us! Liz got this shot of Adam posing under the 'Nude Beach' sign with his camera without him knowing. It looks a bit dodgy but Adam hopes you will believe that he is not into photographing fat, middle-aged men who are the only nudists to be found on these beaches.

Our accomodation was set in seven acres of tropical bush and we shared it with several hundred parrots.

These beautiful but extremely noisy parrots are called Rainbow Lorikeets.

Another animal guest in the roof of our small wooden bungalow, a gekko. He was very welcome- they live on mosquitoes and flies.
